Floating and Claustrophobia

“I’m claustrophobic” is something we hear more than not from clients looking at floating.  First, what is Claustrophobia?  “Claustrophobia is a form of anxiety disorder, in which an irrational fear of having no escape or being closed-in can lead to a panic attack.”, according to Medical News Today.  Does this sound like anybody?  Me, me, me!!!  On a scale to 1 to 10 I would say I’m a 4 on the Claustrophobia scale.  I’d say about 10 years ago when I was flying a lot for work, I was on a small plane from Houston to Mobile and I totally freaked out!  My heart rate went through the roof, my palms got sweaty, my respiration increased.  I don’t know what set me off that day but it was very real and something I have battled ever since.  Continue reading “Floating and Claustrophobia” »

Float Therapy – A treatment for PTSD

PTSD is increasing at an alarming rate amongst active duty servicemen and women, veterans and non-veterans alike. In time,  PTSD may lead to multiple prescribed medications, a disconnect from family and friends, and an increased rate of suicide.

Now there is an alternative treatment for these individuals that are suffering from PTSD, called Float Therapy. Float Therapy, as the name hints at, promotes relaxation through a feeling of weightlessness, achieved simply by mixing water and Epsom salt.

More and more PTSD suffers are believing in the power of float therapy.  Floating tamps down anxiety in the brain in a way that rivals some prescription drugs and meditation.  Commonly prescribed, Ativan, shuts down the amygdala.  Post-float brain wave studies show that the amygdala shuts down post-float as efficiently as Ativan,

More commonly known as sensory deprivation, float therapy consists of clients entering a float room filled with 200 gallons of water, and 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt, allowing the body to float on top of the water without any effort. Floaters then have the ability to turn off lights, and sounds, providing them a nearly 100 percent stimuli-free environment.

It’s like a reset button for your brain. If you think of your brain as a computer, you have all these apps that are going to the hard drive, and you’re letting it all reboot.

The lack of stimuli allows the brain to confront images or memories they have previously suppressed.

When individuals with PTSD get into the float room and get to that point of relaxation, they can address the memories and trauma in a calm environment where there’s nothing else there that could hurt them.  PTSD suffers feel relaxed in the tank. The float industry is seeing individuals sleep through the night after float therapy sessions and weaning themselves off of medications with the guidance of their physicians.

PTSD suffers are finding float therapy to be far superior to other traditional routes, [such as] varying types of drug regiments—one way or another they just temporarily overpower your brain and cause some form of blurred reality—and explaining your situation over and over again to multiple specialists as each one gets to know you and your situation, which caused me recurring internal anxiety and agitation.  PTSD suffers find the float rooms, to be the absolute serenity and calmness is entirely therapeutic.  Pains and stresses are automatically lifted away without me having to say a word to anyone… or take any new pill.

Float Therapy for PTSD suffers results in the following:

  • Deep Relaxation, a loss of the immediate sense of anxiety while in the tank.
  • A loss of sense and time, which in turn removes the immediate sense of depression.  There are no outside influences to “worry” about while in the float room.
  • A feeling of well-being, following the float, similar to relaxation effects of anti-anxiety medications.
  • Reduction of “hyper-vigilance,” There is a period of acceptance and lack of paranoia, a “regular” approach to the outside stimuli
  • Consistent better and easier, more restful sleep, the floats have been reported to have the ability to remove nightmares associated with PTSD symptoms.  Many report that the sleep post-float is better than any drugs they have been prescribed for sleep.

Does the floating equipment make a difference?

In one simple answer, yes!

There are tons of different ways that you can experience sensory deprivation with devices such as float tanks, float pods, or float rooms. Although each device does the same thing, we’ve found that the float room has a few extra benefits. Here’re some of the features that you can expect when floating in a float room.


It was found that less than 50% of people were comfortable with the smaller float tanks or float pods typically offered by floatation spas. At iSofloat, we have eliminated this fear by providing float rooms that are over 50% larger than float pods and capsules. Each of our four float rooms measures 8ft in length, 6ft wide and are high enough that you can easily stand up and walk around.


**Just to compare, a float pod typically measures 85” in length and 55” in width.  The key difference is how close the lid can be to your face when floating.  Our goal at iSofloat is to provide a relaxed, stress-free environment and our mission was to eliminate the feeling of claustrophobia or confinement.


In addition to more space, the large and light side-opening doors and internal grab handles make getting in and out of the room a breeze. Many people in San Antonio have turned to float therapy due to injury.  By allowing ease of entrance into the float room, this creates a sense of independence for floaters who typically would need assistance. To compare to float tanks and float pods which offer top hatch lids, our doors are easy to close and open. If Stephen Curry is doing it, maybe I should too?

Stephen Curry is one of the hottest commodities in the basketball realm right now.  Just two days ago, for the first time in NBA history he was unanimously voted the 2016 MVP.  This is the second year in a row Curry has won the NBA’s MVP award.  I have to say impressive.  Now, San Antonio’s very own Kawhi Leonard did come in second this year.  GO SPURS GO!!  Now for all the dedicated Spurs fans out there as you know, Curry and Golden State are fierce competitors.  If we pull off a win tonight in Oklahoma against the Thunder we will more than likely face them in the very near future as our fabulous Spurs go for Seis!!

You are probably asking what this has to do with floating, well, let me tell you.  Stephen Curry is a faithful and devoted to floating.  He floats at a commercial float center in San Francisco.  ESPN in December 2015 did a three minute Hang Time Segment on him and Harris Barnes.  They have regularly scheduled float appointments.  Curry claims that it allows him to just relax, visualize and recover from soreness.  The ESPN interviewer, Sam Alipour, correlates Golden States winning season to these guys possibly floating.  I tend to agree.  Floating just might give them the winning edge they need to get to the Finals.  Just think if it can do this for Stephen Curry what it can do for you!  Maybe we need to get some Spurs in our center and give them that competitive edge too!!  Enjoy the video.  PS: Curry’s wife Ayesha floats regularly as well.  And GO SPURS GO!!

Over Stimulation

Ringing phones, the constant “ding” of emails coming into your inbox, text messages coming multiple at a time from the group text message.  I’m not sure how many of you remember the “Ahhhh Calgon Take Me Away” commercial form 1988?  I remember it and often feel like I live it on a daily basis.  There are days I get to the point where I say “Calgon take me away!”  I easily get over stimulated and if we are honest with ourselves, most of us do but we just push it down and keep going.  Why?  We have 2 dozen gourmet cupcakes we need to make for our kids bake sale tomorrow and we still have to slug through Pinterest to find the perfect recipe!  At the end of most days, I want to throw my phone into the ocean but I can’t, I do however put it on the charger in another room around 9 pm, some days earlier than 9 pm.  Floating takes me to a quiet place where I have less anxiety, can truly relax and I’m NOT overstimulated.  It is amazing and I love the feeling.  Research has proven that floating tamps down anxiety in a way that rivals prescription drugs and meditation.  If you suffer from anxiety consider a few floats in one of our float rooms that will be opening soon.  Click the link below for an article on anxiety and floating.
